INTERNET ARGUMENT!!!!
I hate internet arguments because everyone ends up being stupid, but I always get sucked into them.
Currently in the middle of a debate on Mene about "what one show made anime popular in the US". That's like.. the dumbest question ever since you can't just point to one show and be like, OMGZ THIS ONE IS THE HOLY SHOW! Normally I wouldn't touch that one, but this girl was claiming that Pokemon is the sole reason that anime is popular now. And I mean that quite literally, everytime anyone tries to mention shows like DBZ and Sailor Moon she shoots them down by saying that since there was no "anime section in movie stores and stuff", they were didn't contribute at all. Also.. apparently since Sailor Moon was a girl's show, no boys liked it and so it failed. (
tmchiba I'M LOOKING AT YOU) And apparently also, if it made anime even a little popular, then there would be more "popular girl's shows". Can I just say that I hate when people classify shows as for boys or for girls? BECAUSE ITS NOT TRUE. Then she grouped everything ever shown on CN as "shounen anime for boys". This included... Tenchi and Bebop. Wut?
Anyway, I should probably bow out since I'm sure she's some 13 year old deluded child who has only ever watched Cartoon Network anime. I take that back... I just checked her Mene profile and she's listed as "a college student of psychology and creative writing."
There's no hope for the world.

Sailor Moon and DBZ were part of the second anime wave, what began this cascade and while DBZ has no plot, Sailor Moon set new standards beyond anything before. All must learn of this! huhah!

Though...Honestly...a good candidate for what made anime popular in the US would be Speed Racer. Never seen it or anything, but it's a 60s series that became popular in the US, and my *Aunt* remembers it whenever we talk about anime around her, and uses it as a 'Oh, I remember Anime', and all that stuff. recent stuff like Pokemon, etc., is all new.
Meh, not something I would get into an argument about, as I'd be biased for those I like too. Which is why I just mentioned a show I'd never seen, as that's the most objective.
::shrugs::
Speed Racer!
Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer
He's a demon on wheels
He's a demon and he's gonna be chasing after someone
He's gaining on you so you better look alive
He's busy revving up the powerful Mach Five
And when the odds are against him and there's daaangerous work to do
You bet your life Speed Racer's gonna see it through
Go Speed Racer
Go Speed Racer
Go Speed Racer go!!!!!
