MOVIE: Hesher

Hey look, I went and saw another movie by myself. AND NOW I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS AND NEED TO SHARE THEM WITH SOMEONE BEFORE I OVER-FLOW AND PROBABLY EXPLODE. WHICH MY ROOMMATE WILL NOT APPRECIATE.

the tl;dr, spoiler-free version: oh my god this movie was amazing. It is sooo much more than the trailers make it out to be and I was definitely crying by the end. GO SEE IT.

So, I have to start with a confession, the only reason I went to see this movie (Joe's adorable movie pimping aside) is things like this:

(yes that is JGL in nothing but underwear, I CAN HEAR YOU JUDGING ME. LALALALALA)

and this:

(also, there is possibly something wrong with me, idk idk, just hear me out)

The trailer presents Hesher as "boy loses mother, crazy possibly-homeless dude crashes into his life, shenanigans. also, natalie portman in glasses". BUT GUYS, IT WAS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT.

The movie presents this boy, TJ, who has a shitty life. His mom died in a car accident, his father is depressed and incapable of functioning. They live with his grandmother, he is bullied at school, has no friends and the only thing left of his mom (her car), has been sold to the junkyard. Enter: Hesher.

When we meet him, he is living in a construction zone where TJ breaks a window in anger (cuz, yknow, his life sucks). This attracts the attention of security and Hesher is not amused. Apparently Hesher's idea of a ~distraction is to throw a grenade out the broken window. (Why do they always have grenades? McGarrett I'm looking at you). And from that moment on, Hesher basically haunts TJ's life.

And yes, there's a lot of crazy shenanigans (He climbs a telephone pole in his underwear with a fork because TJ's grandmother only has 4 TV channels and none of them are porn) but there are also a lot of really sweet moments. It's kinda of like a study in grief I guess and TJ's own personal journey and how he deals with it. Hesher says and does a lot of crazy things, but if you look past the insanity (...like that time he BLEW UP the car of the kid bullying TJ at school), you can tell he's just trying to help TJ deal with his fucked up life.

Along the way, there is also Natalie Portman's character who works at the grocery store and also has a shitty life. But TJ strikes up a quiet friendship with her that is really sweet because he wants to help her as best he can too. Which of course means that Hesher is brought into her life too. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when they 3 of them are driving along in Hesher's black van and Hesher tells this crazy story about the time he has 4 girls in the back of his van and he's basically trying to ~please all of them, but then he realized he was just too overwhelmed so he sat back.... and as soon as he stopped trying, all the girls just.... helped each other, and he got to watch it all resolve itself. AND IT'S REALLY A TOUCHING STORY BECAUSE HE WAS JUST TRYING TO TELL HER THAT NO MATTER HOW OVERWHELMED YOU GET WITH YOUR SITUATION, SOMETIMES ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TAKE A STEP BACK AND IT WILL WORK ITSELF OUT. (I see you all backing away, stay with me here).

One of the parts I really liked in the movie was actually Hesher's friendship with the grandmother. The family was essentially falling apart before Hesher showed up, and through his interactions with the grandmother, you can see it starting to get better. His insistence that TJ take walks with her (even tho he never does), the eating of dinner together, the scene when they share her weed (medical). It was sweet.. in a.. strange... way.

Even at the very end, Hesher makes TJ and his dad realize that they have each other..... by telling a story about how he lost his left nut. OKAY MAYBE YOU NEED TO SEE THE MOVIE TO GET IT BECAUSE NOW I SOUND TOTALLY INSANE.

*cough* ANYWAY. The cast is A+. Natalie is adorable. The kid basically carried the whole movie and I want to squish him. JGL said lots of delightfully vulgar things and wandered around half-naked a lot while also being a weird guardian angel-type who listens to Metallica and sets lots of things on fire. AND EVERYTHING IS WONDERFUL.

I think I'm going to go see it again on Tuesday. Or maybe Wednesday.

This was supposed to be more coherent. But there are still too many feelings.

UGH IDK. HERE HAVE THIS INSTEAD:
